Facts, tips & interesting facts about laser hair removal and all other types of hair removal. What is the best? What are the differences?
Today, laser hair removal is the most advanced method for permanently reducing annoying body hair. It is based on the principle of selective photothermolysis, in which light is directed specifically at the hair root. This destroys the hair matrix without damaging the surrounding tissue. The treatment is safe, scientifically researched and suitable for many people with different skin and hair types - provided it is carried out professionally and customized.
If you're wondering how the method works, whether it works for you, how much it costs or how you should prepare - this comprehensive guide answers it all.
In laser hair removal, light energy is converted into heat to destroy specific hair follicles. The method only attacks hair roots in the active growth phase (anagen phase). Several sessions are therefore necessary to permanently remove all hair. The technique of photothermolysis has been continuously developed since the 1990s and is now mature in both medical and cosmetic applications. It is rated as effective and safe by Apotheken Umschau, among others.
The alexandrite laser (755 nm) is particularly effective on light skin (Fitzpatrick I-III) with dark hair. Its short wavelength works close to the surface and offers excellent results on areas such as the face, armpits or intimate areas. This laser has been medically tested and is recommended by dermatologists, for example, according to the German Dermatology Association (DDG).
The Nd:YAG laser (1064 nm) has a longer wavelength, which means it penetrates deeper into the skin and is also suitable for darker skin types (IV-VI). Treatment with this laser reduces the risk of hyper- or hypopigmentation. According to Netdoktor, it is currently the safest laser for heavily pigmented skin.
The basis for choosing the right treatment is the so-called Fitzpatrick scale, which divides skin types into six categories. Light skin with dark hair delivers the best results, but modern laser technology means that people with darker skin can now also be treated - albeit with adjusted parameters.
Laser hair removal is not suitable for pregnant women, those taking certain medications (e.g. isotretinoin), active skin infections or diseases such as lupus. Tattoos or moles in the target area are also excluded.
A consultation, including a skin analysis, takes place before the first treatment. You should avoid sunbathing and self-tanning for at least four weeks beforehand. The day before, you must shave the area to be treated thoroughly - but do not epilate or wax.
A short test pulse checks tolerance. The skin is then protected with a cooling system and the laser is passed over the area pulse by pulse. Depending on the area, a session lasts between 10 minutes (e.g. upper lip) and 90 minutes (legs or back).
The skin may be slightly reddened or swollen. You should not use any irritating products for the first 48 hours. You should avoid intense heat (sauna, sport), sun and chlorinated water for at least a week. Gentle skin care with aloe vera, panthenol or cooling compresses is recommended.
According to the German Medical Association, laser hair removal is very safe when used correctly. Slight side effects such as redness or a feeling of tightness are normal and temporary. However, incorrect laser selection or untrained staff can lead to pigment shifts or minor burns. It is therefore crucial to only undergo treatment at certified studios or medically supervised institutes.
As lasers can only affect hair in the anagen phase, 6-10 sessions are usually required at intervals of 4-8 weeks. Fine or hormonally controlled hair (e.g. PCOS) may require more sessions. Clinical studies also show that different areas of the body respond differently to lasers - armpits and bikini line often respond more quickly, legs and face more slowly.
The costs depend on the size of the area, hair structure and number of sessions. Example prices:
Many studios offer package prices with a 10-50% discount or monthly installments. A cost overview helps with the comparison.
You will get the best results if you take all the care instructions seriously:
Hormonal fluctuations (e.g. due to puberty, pregnancy or PCOS) can cause new hair growth - permanent straightening may require more touch-ups.
